Round Table this Week

No more skanky web links, please. Dump on Kobe all you like, but there is no place for Brittney, Jessica, or Eva on the blog.

- What's up with the injury bug? I have three players on my KBL team out with ankle sprains, and now KB is out as well. T, how many games?

- Read somewhere that Bynum had some spat with Phil? Is he going to turn into a Kwame? Trade bait: Bynum for Garnett.

- Nash rocks, did you see highlights last night against Sac-town? He carved them up with 20 dimes.

- Zack Randolph is a monster in the paint. Reminds me of Sunday when I had to guard Chris Porteous. Dude comes right at you in the post on drives, and has a knack for angling his body to the hoop. By the way, Porteous has 40 lbs and 4 inches on me.

See you all tonight, I think Kev Trott is coming out as well.

Game 7 in November?

Hot Rod and J,

Missed a good 4-4 run last night at the Squad Room. Traffic wasn't bad in Vancouver at all, no problems getting around. However, I had to put this out to give Rence something to think about today.

We ran a wide-open, sweet shooting, best of 7 series. T on one side, me and Dr Nige on the other, and the rest of the PRC old skoolers split up evenly.

- T's squad was on fire early, juking and driving into the lane at will. T didn't have his long game going, but he was digging deep into his trunk of junk to abuse his counterpart repeatedly. Someone call Zenith 911.

- Looked like it was going to be a short night, as they ran off to a 3-0. I was hitting pull-ups going both ways (finally, the achilles is up to 95%) but nobody else could hit a shot.

- Then the tide starting going out. Two old skoolers made shots, and Dr. Nige put on a clinic in the post. Drop step good, back seal lob good, tough putback good. Call it 3-3 and we are going to game 7.

- T goes up early by four but can't put it away as legs get tired. We claw back to 18-18, but shot goes clang. We pick up board, I dribble down center, and flick it to creaky Old Skooler way wide on right wing. I turn my back to set weak side screen, shout goes out. Dude launched it
from NBA land, and I don't even hear it as it drops pure net.

Game, set, and match.

Bill Simmons is Brilliant

Bill Simmons at ESPN.COM posted the following article on NBA week 1. Dude is brilliant. Here is an excerpt on microfracture surgery:

"Casey from Austin, Texas, sent along this disturbing e-mail: "I had microfracture surgery a year ago today. I'm writing to tell you my knee, a year after the surgery, is a combination of a frozen monkey fist and a bag of chunky gravy. I understand I didn't have the same surgeon or rehab as Amare, but I'm also not trying to play 100 NBA games in seven months. I'd like to be able to run the bases, maybe play a lazy half-court game of basketball [I've pretty much given up on soccer]. It hurts to walk to my car. How anyone, even Amare, could come back and be 100 percent after this surgery is beyond me. We're talking cartilage here, people. It doesn't grow back. And it hurts.")"

I can't imagine trying to come back from this procedure. Read the rest of Bill at:

what up my brothers

are we going to start this la lakers bs again. i don't want to hype t up just to let him down in the 1st round again...or did they even make the playoffs last year. the only way the lakers will get a 50 game season is if they played in a 160 game league. last time i check that ain't the deal.

kobe had to change to 24 'coz too many girls were runnning around with "8" tattooed to their asses...against their will. bynum and crew will be great for 20 games then the season will kick their asses. keep smush...he is good for a few turnovers a game.

predictions...west...dallas...east...detroit mark it in your book lads.

Trade Speculation

Trade Kobe for Billups and Prince. Would Dumars go for it?

T Replies with Laker Analysis

Rod:

Anytime you need to start a Laker thread you know I'm willing to oblige.Yes - this team is as good as they looked last night.

They are deep:

They are at least 2 deep at every position - and when Mihm and Kwame get back they will have a serious front court to deal with - think in terms of having Mihm, Kwame, Bynum, and Ronny Turiaf to take on the Duncans, Garnetts, Nowitzkis, of the west.

Bynum:
I was even surprised by the progress this kid has made in the offseason. He bulked up and has shown some great moves around the basket (thanks to Kareem). He is the next great center of the Laker future - this is a guarantee. In the next 3-5 years he will be a consistent 20-10 guy and he will only be 23-24 years old. Shaq who?

Kobe:
I know ya'll like to rag on Kobe - but he plays to win. In the past he needed to hoist up dozens of shots for them to win. They just didn't have the talent and depth to deal with the rest of the league. Now they are at a point where he doesn't have to be the spotlight on each possesion and the triangle -I know you don't believe it - but he is OK with this. If the Lakers win and he contributes, whether it be scoring, passing, rebounding, Dfence - he will do it. MVP.

Smush:
Rod, you're very accurate with your assesment - in fact I wrote about the same issue on the Lakers blog after the loss to Seattle on Sat night. Smush is just not good enough to start on this team. He is a great athlete that makes terrible decisions - and the triangle is all predicated on great decision making. He will have to go - and they will need to speed up the development of Jordan Farmar who will be the point guard of the future.

50 wins:
This will happen.

They are a much better team than last year - they have the best coach in the business (can anybody argue this) - and they are playing deeped and with more poise. It's early - but keep this in mind: They have 13 of their next 14 games at home - this will help them get off to a strong start and give Kobe some time to get back to full strength so that he can help carry them down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Bleed Purple and Gold.
T

Laker Observations

Saw the Lakers game last night against Minnesota. Based on last night's performance they will get 50 wins. I actually didn't mind Kobe. Bynum is turning out to be the draft choice Kwame should have been. Nice hands, big kid, athletic and willing to work. Odom was solid and Kobe turned it one when he had to.

They are a much deeper team this year, as you've said. They were actually fun to watch. I'm not sold on Smush. He looks shakey and his confidence doesn't look high. Question: Is Walton that good and did all he need was the extra minutes or is it a case of him coming back to earth soon? Where's Mihm?

Still hating Kobe,

Weekend Thoughts on Kobe, Amare, and Vinsanity

- Something is up with Kobe's knee, has anyone seen him work out?

- Amare will screw up Suns chemistry unless he totally changes his game. Nobody comes back from microfracture surgery with the same > explosiveness, and Amare's game was all about explosiveness. Unless he learns some moves from old Kevin McHale tapes, he will be a 10/5 guy coming off the bench.

- Since nobody has anything good to say about them, I think I will be a Knicks fan this season.

- Any truth to the rumor that Vinsanity might go back to TO?

It's a New Season and St. Andrews is Buzzing

Vinny:

I think it's time for the blog to make another appearance....Lets get it started with this. Lakers (without Kobe and Kwame and Mihm) 114 - Suns 106.

I'm making the call right now - Lakers will win 50 games this season, and will make it to the Western Conference finals.

They are a much deeper and more experienced team than the one that took the Suns to the 7th game in the first round last season. Kobe can carry the load for them as needed, but with the addition of Vlade (the Impaler) Radmonovich, underated (and quality defender) Mo Evans, confident (and local) rookie Jordan Farmar, and another year for Kwame and Andrew Bynum to get comfortable, he will not have to as much. Also, Lamar Odom is a year wiser, and plays like a true veteran now.

Phil Jackson is back, the triangle is back, and most importantly they have horses to play the kinda of D that can make a difference in the west.

There are only 3 teams in the west that are clearly better than the Lakers; the Mavs, Spurs and Suns (despite last night). Which means the Lakers are in a dog fight with everbody else. And with Kobe (and his new number 24) they have the biggest and baddest dog in the fight.

Lets get this season started. Purple and Gold is all you need to know.

D-Wade is for Real

That was a crazy game last night, with D-Wade hitting two free throws with 1.9 left and Howard calling time-out on the wrong free throw.

- Is this worse than Chris Webber calling TO when Michigan didn't have one in the NCAA title game?

- The TO wasn't Howard's worst play. Missing his two free throws minutes earlier cost them the game.

- Why didn't Avery Johnson leave Marquis Daniels on Wade? It worked in the first half, but he went back to Griffin in the second. Puzzling.

After the Mavs beat the Suns, I was all Mavs for the finals. But after watching the Heat win 3 at home, I have to say that I am rooting for the Big Diesel to win one more, just to stick it to Kobe.

Believe

Caught Game 7 at home on Saturday night and now it is my turn to toss up my partially digested crow.

It was the young Lakers who gagged as Smush, Kwame, and Lamar all left their game at the hotel. They couldn't score inside, and they couldn't stay in front of Diaw or Barbosa, and they couldn't guard anybody. Why didn't Kwame knock the Brazilian into the stands? Why did Smush switch on S/R instead of going under and making Nash shoot? Why didn't they put Kobe on Nash?

As much as I enjoyed the Suns win, my feeling is that reality will hit when they run up against Elton Brand and the Clippers. Nashie's only hope is to bait Cassell and the young Shaun Livingstone into a run and gun game that leaves the bigs huffing and puffing down the stretch. Clips in 5.

Game 7 On

I was watching tape until 1:30am last night. Observations:

- I thought Lakers were going to close out in Game 6, but the Suns finally got stuff going in the half court offense. They ran screen-roll every time with Nash, and when they didn't get roll, Nash pulled it back outside. Then Diaw or Thomas had a mismatch in the low post against Smush, and Nash got them the ball. If Lakers ran double at the post, the post player flipped it to shooter on the baseline opposite. Or, if the post pass wasn't there, Nash was 1-on-1 against Kwame and he ate his lunch with a variety of left drives and cross over pull-ups. Dude is only 6'2"!!!

- Kobe was sick, filthy, nasty in the end game. Unreal shooting touch, especially the two long threes. I respect is game, but I still don't like him. Suns best move was to put Marion on Kobe, something I was going to e-mail D'Antoni to do. Marion is the same size, and just as quick. I think for Game 7, Suns need to put a variety of defenders on Kobe, maybe get Bell to bait him into going 1-on-1, and then finish with Marion in Q4.

- Smush looks totally lost. No confidence whatsover. Suns need to go right at him, Luke Walton, and Kwame and tag them all with early fouls.

- Diaw and Barbosa finally have their stroke going. Take it to the hole!

- Put Kobe on Nash, that's the key for Lakers winning game 7.

- Here's an anecdote from page 2 on ESPN. What's with this Mamba stuff for Kobe? You can't give yourself your own handle...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060505
"Living in Hollywood. Which gives me a chance to hear stories like this: During the timeout right before Kobe's game-tying layup in Game 4, the Mamba waited until Jackson was done talking, then went over to Smush Parker, grabbed him by the shoulders in full view of everyone sitting near the bench, then started poking him in the chest while repeatedly screaming, "You steal that ball! You steal that ball! You steal that [bleeping] ball!" Apparently Smush looked terrified, like a 14-year-old minding his own business in Compton who was suddenly being ordered to rob a liquor store by the leader of the Crips. But Smush stole the damned ball. And if there was video footage of this moment in the huddle, I think I would pay three grand for it. "

Can't wait for Saturday 5:30pm.

Laker Fan #1 Writes from London

Boys:

First off I'm adding Alex to this as I know how much he hates Kobe.

Having tons of trouble getting any basketball over here - all they care about is World Cup (Rooney broke his foot - so everyone is freaking out).

I saw that the Lakers got game 5 handed to them. A sign of a young team. But you all know that they have the true MVP and game 6 is in the bag. A Lakers Clippers series will be one of the all time greats.

What is up with Kwame being set up with this sexual assault charge? Just like Kobe, the Man is always trying to keep a brother down.

Anyways thanks to all of you - and I mean all of you that said Kobe sucked and the Lakers would do nothing this year - for coming around and seeing that they are what they are. A young talented team with some growing pains, but also with the best coach and player in the game. It's not eating crow when you admit reality. Way to drop yer pants and grab your ankles like real men.

Now onto game 6 and a second round match up of historic proportions. Gotta love this game! - even from London. I'm off to Amsterdam on Friday - so you may not hear from me for about 4-7 years.

Cheers

Quiet Kobe

April 2/06 Money Has TT at the Buzzer, 91-88

Score is tied, seven seconds left. Money inbounds the ball and gets it to shooter on the right side of court five feet inside the center line. Jason and Dunner are both up on the shooter, dude fakes up, steps around, and launches it. Both Jason and Dunner get a piece of the ball and avoid fouling. It spins up, hits glass, and rattles in. Money bench goes nuts as we stare in disbelief.

With 1.5 seconds left, we go for long pass that gets picked off and we lose by three. This was way worse than Navi's heave three seasons ago in John's face. I mean, Jay and Andy had the dude sealed. Ouch.

With Carrie out with flu and the rest of our long jumpers not falling, Craig kept us in the game with an assortment of drives, put-backs, and steals in the open court. Unlike past dust-ups, this was a clean game and fun to play.

Thanks to Amanda for bringing the chocolate cake to celebrate my 36th. It definitely helped take the sting off losing to Money yet again.

Big Girl with Oomph

C-Wats,

Do you think you could guard her? She is Courtney Paris, 6'4" / 220 freshman center for Oklahoma.

And she has a twin sister.

TT Uses Size on Jamma

Another nice win last Sunday over Jamma, 130-100. I got the scouting report all wrong, missing the ex-UBC gunner (I should have looked up his stats) and the ripped woman with the funky 'do. Jessica was impressed by her physique and if Jamma's men had passed her the ball more, the game would have been closer.

We started quickly as usual, scoring 28 points in 15 minutes with Jamma keeping pace. They managed to stay close until the 20 minute mark when they started to tire and we put down the hammer with an 18-0 run. For once, we had a size advantage with our men and we laid out some abuse inside. Craig was the animal with 25 boards and two dunks. Carrie, Kell, and Beers were awesome, hitting jumpers from all over and getting into the lane at will.

Dunner had the highlight reel plays of the night, one on defence and one on O. The first was a monster block on the right baseline on a drive by Jamma's big man, totally clean and nothing to argue about. Second was a post up on Dave Munro on the baseline. Dave swiped at the ball, Dunner bobbled it, spun backwards, and fired a fade-away three that was all net. Must be those Lululemon boxers.

We go against Money next week in a grudge match.

Lummer Falls by Two, Missing Nohr and Keeler

Very exciting finish to beat Lummer 107-105 with Craig's underhanded tip-in with 1.5 seconds left. Of course, if we hadn't blown two wide open lay-ups during the last three minutes, it wouldn't have been this close. Observations:

- We executed our strategy perfectly: let Navi score 60 on 58% shooting, so he would have no legs for the stretch run. Right, just like we planned it. Tired legs or otherwise, Jason played phenomenal D to avoid fouling Navi as he missed his last layup with less than a minute to play. Navi is an awesome baller.

- Nick Vojik was a beast for Lummer, going 6 for 8 from three point range in the absence of Nohr and Keeler.

- Nick also had the bedshitter play of the game (to use Lummer's terms). According to Jessie Evans, he promised to "slap one into the stands" during a timeout because TT women are so strong. The very next play, Carrie steals a pass, races down the left side of the court, and goes up strong. Nick stretches all 6'5" / 230 and blocks Carrie's shot cleanly. We take the two for goaltending, which proves to be the difference.

- I would hate to be a woman on Lummer's team. 40% of the squad on the floor, maybe 5% of shot attempts. Hey Lummer, show the girls some love, Jessie can shoot!

- TT men seem to be having conditioning problems? We seem to be sucking wind badly with around 18 minutes left in the game. I think we need to sub quickly during the second half of games and use our timeouts strategically.

Thoughts on Basketball Legends

We lost a tough game to Scotia Macleod yesterday, falling 104-102 to a very big and revenge-minded opponent. However, congrats to UBC Women who won 56-53 for their second Bronze Baby in three years. Observations:

- What was up with Ron Putzi's Scotia Investment Advisor banner behind our bench? The banner highlighted his credentials, including "BC High School Basketball Player of the Year." Relevance? I wanted to ask him what should I do with my Nortel stock, down double digits, and faced with another accounting re-statement.

- By my rough calculations, we gave up 16" and 150 lbs in total height and weight differential. The former pros used all the subtle tricks that you can't call in KBL including hooks, elbow nudges, and forearm shimmies from behind. Lars may be old and slow, but there was nothing we could do to stop those rolling hooks in the lane. His 14 points in the lane were the difference as we went to the double team and that opened up space for Kelsey to shoot threes.

- Temo is unstoppable when he has that fade-away mid-range jumper going. I think he played pro in Israel.

- TT shot well, with every player hitting at least one three which is a team record. In the last eight minutes, we had four good looking threes go back-front-back and rattle out.

- We couldn't get much going inside, as Putzi and Lars parked themselves in the lane, and Kelsey aggressively trapped our women every time they went left baseline. Carrie is now prepared for any 6'3" 220 lb double-teaming defenders in international play.

- Thanks to Watson house-guest Craig who filled in for injured John. Craig ran some quality minutes, hit a bunch of threes, and swatted two shots into next week.

- Dunner had the shooting stroke going and looked pretty wiped at the end of the game. I am guessing he missed his North Van League game afterwards. Those Richmond guys always want to put on a show when they play former alumni.

Random Thoughts on Rainy Tuesday

1. KBL: Dousing Blaze 97-72
Nothing sweeter than teasing Blaze with hopes of a comeback and then snuffing them out in the last eight minutes to win by 25. Jason had the sweetest block of the game, Dunner's was a close second. We are 4-0, tied with Lummerland for first. Will provide the scouting report on Scotia later this week.

Speaking of Lummer, those dudes are sick, dropping 160 on the heads of Cole and duMont to win by 45. Amanda, did Jesse Evans get a shot? We play Lummer the week after, and Randy should still be in Halifax. This is our chance to steal a game.

2. UBC Women Play on Friday, 11am PST
They go against York, Jessica's graduate alma mater for law/environmental studies. I don't think she paid much attention to York basketball when she was there.

3. Go Bulldogs!
What is going on with Vancouver high schools? Four teams (Killarney, Magee, Kits, CHURCHILL) in this week's senior boys tourney?! When did they change the Lower Mainland format? Jason will have the answer.

Dunner, where is Richmond? Back in the day, Churchill had decent teams but we always ran into Colts (Putzi, Tait deWit) at BCIT. Seriously considering taking early lunch on Wednesday to catch Bulldogs at 11am in Agrodome because I am curious whether there is anyone over six feet on this team.

4. Jim Jackson Goes to Lakers
Doesn't matter, Kobe still won't pass the ball.

Homicide Review: Richmond Women's League

I checked out the Richmond Women's League yesterday that plays at McNeill High School (#4 Rd south of Westminister). C-Wats and Beers run with a bunch of ex-T-Birds and Falcons on a team called Evans and Friends, captained by none other than Jessie (not Jessica) Evans. As I stepped into the gym, I recognized plenty of familiar faces from the Kerrisdale Co-Ed league: Donna from Blaze, Audrey from MP Ballers, Brooke and a few others from BTR. Is the K-League the farm team for RWBL or vice versa?

The league looked fairly well organized, with two refs per game, score keepers, and functioning score board. McNeill HS is new as well, with a great floor, bright paint, and very good lighting for shooting threes. The main gym is where you want your games, with plenty of room on sidelines and baselines. The small gym next door has its issues: score clock not working, lack of heat (hey janitor, the league is paying rent!), slippery floor (hey janitor, ditto), and wooden backboards.

The league is composed of eight teams with a real mix in terms of caliber and age. Some of the established teams are long time supporters, with players in their 40's. Maybe the wheels don't run as fast as they used to but they all have game. The other teams are like Evans and Friends - young, fast, and athletic.

I stayed for the first half of the Evans Friends game. Some observations:

  • Game started sloppy. Opposing big bodies were scoring inside at will, while E&F kept throwing passes a half second too late. E&F finally got warm and started running 12 minutes into the half.
  • Jesse was popping jumpers from all over and showed lightness of foot on defence. Very deft touch - hey Lummer, why don't you get Randy Nohr to pass her the ball more often? I think she would be happier with the number of touches TT women get.
  • Finally met Chrissy, who we tried to recruit a few years back. Nice mid-range game and an astute defender. She gave me her special recipe for noodles with sauce.
  • J-Wats had trouble cutting across the slippery floor but was able to get to the hoop with either hand off the dribble. She should be playing in Europe!
  • Beers has big hands, which she put to good use on a killer hesitation right to left crossover in the open court.
  • Kelly's and Temo's son, endowed with great basketball genes, has started picking up the hoopster vibe. Didn't cry and gurgled happily on the bench as E&F went on a 10-4 run to finish the half.
Verdict: Richmond League is the only game in town if you want to play competitive women's ball. Refs are patchy, but that's expected in any league outside the campuses. E&F is the team to beat, a deadly combination of speed, size, and outside shooting.

Kobe Haters: 81 Reasons to Believe

Dear Haters:

Kobe scored 81 points in one game tonight.

Let me repeat, 81 points. Regardless of whatever negative stuff you can
say, you gotta admit that this kid is absolutely sick!!!! EIGHTY ONE
POINTS!!!

I got the game on tape if anyone missed it (second highest scoring game in
NBA history - next to Wilts legendary 100 in 1962)

All About Kobe

Once again, it's Charlie Rosen on Fox with the detailed analysis. The Lakers haven't been on TV at all (what's up with Sonics/Magic last night on SportsNet - who cares?), and I don't have satellite so I haven't seen much of Kobe myself.

Judging from highlights:

Kobe has a sick left-right-left move, the one described by Charlie. It's a simple double crossover but the way Kobe jukes his body weight from one side to another makes it impossible to stop. T, are you running your DVR over and over again to add to your reportoire?

No surprise that his D is MIA. When you score 40+, who has time to hunker down at your own end? Unless your name is Mike and you get it done going both ways.

Observations from War Memorial on a Saturday Night

Jess and I checked out our first T-Birds game at the Point Grey campus this year. Observations in no particular order:

1. Fans Suck...
Sitting at center court facing the score keeper, we were surrounded by Lethbridge fans. What's up with the local fans? This is the only place to get your live high caliber hoop fix!

2. But the Score Board is Awesome
Some rich almuni must have donated some money. The new score clock is frighteningly big and bright. The new announced is a 10,000% improvement over Bradley O. I know Brad from high school days, but sorry, the new guy is much much better.

3. Women Rock
Lady T-Birds are #2 in the CIS rankings, and they showed their best stuff. Even though they lost their starting point guard, the ball actually moves better around the court. Kate made all the right decisions going inside when available, reversing the ball crisply, and hitting open threes.

Third-year guard Erica McGuiness is the real deal. She has a herky-jerky way of moving on the court, but she is deceptively quick and has a great nose for the hoop. Very quick release, and she even showed an assortment of post-up moves. Would love to get her out to run with Triple Threat in 2007.

4. Too Many Chiefs, Not Enough Indians?
On to the men's game, Chad Clifford is a stud. 21 points in 16 minutes, 4-7 from three point land, going to the hoop strong, and making plays. I don't remember him looking like this at SFU.

I have to admit I was skeptical at first. Is there enough ball to go around between the shooters? However, Coach Hanson has things under control. Pick your poison: Bains, Archibald, or Clifford. Double one and the other two will kill you. Archibald was Robin this night, going for 20 but looking flat and bored in the second half. Bains played Stockton, relatively quiet with 9 points, but a whole lot of assists.

5. They Never Taught us That at Camp
Love that low, sweeping wrap-around bounce pass UBC guards use to get ball into the post. Double love when it goes in from the high to low post with defender sealed and helpless. No one else seems to do it - is this a UBC specialty?

6. Best Name for 6'8" Shot Blocking Forward
Bryson Kool. How cool is that.
We are out until the UVIC / SFU back to back series at the end of January.

Kobe Sucks: Part II

Check out the wicked comments on Kobe. Charlie Rosen is a good friend of Phil Jackson, so this is all inside stuff. T, what do you have to say?
